I know I know, I’m officially a fun sucker but picking at and popping pimples really is the worst thing you can do. While it may seem benign or even beneficial to pop pimples, it can lead to greater risk for several skin health issues.
So Stop It! Here’s why:
Reason 1 – Inflammation
Popping pimples can lead to increased inflammation and puffiness in the affected area. This makes your blemish more noticeable after you pop it, immediately drawing more attention to your pimples.
Reason 2 – Pain
Pain exists for a reason; it tells us to stop doing something that hurts. In addition to making pimples more noticeable, popping hurts and prolongs the healing process.
Reason 3 – Infection
Blemishes can become infected on their own when bacteria are trapped inside of clogged pores, but popping pimples exposes them to the bacteria and other um, foreign matter under your nails, which can lead to a significantly greater risk for skin infection.
Reason 4 – Slower healing
During an acne breakout, the last thing you want is for the experience to last longer. That’s one of the main reasons so many people are tempted to pop pimples. Don’t do it! After popping, the skin heals more slowly, increasing the length of the breakout rather than making it go by faster.
Reason 5 – Scarring
The single most important reason to stop popping is that it also significantly increases the risk of permanent scarring. By popping blemishes, you may create larger wounds that don’t heal correctly, causing scarring that is not only disfiguring and permanent, but extremely difficult to treat, often requiring treatments that may or may not completely fix the issue.
How Should I Care for Pimples Instead?
Maintain a Consistent Morning & Evening Skincare Routine
Following a consistent and effective daily skincare routine is the most important step toward preventing blemishes before they happen and keeping skin healthy. Refer to Episode 1 for some of my product recommendations to add to your home regimen.
If you’re ready to add serums to your arsenal, I have three Glymed Plus products to tell you about:
Skin Restoring Fulvic Elixir - Fulvic acid is a critical nutrient and one of the most powerful antioxidants for skin health. Known for its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties, this serum is a must.
Living Cell Clarifier fights Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation naturally without irritating chemicals or prescription drugs. And using these couldn’t be easier: dispense one pump of each in the palm of your hand, blend and pat onto your face and neck.
Skin Medication No. 5, One of the most effective spot treatment serums in clearing and preventing inflamed acne breakouts.
Don’t Forget to Exfoliate
Exfoliation is an important part of any skincare routine, but it can be especially important for those who are prone to pimples or acne breakouts. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, which can help to prevent pores from clogging. Removing dead skin cells also promotes healthy cell turnover, encouraging the production of new skin cells as well as increasing collagen and elastin production.
Glycolic Cleanser by Skin Script is gentle but effective on the face, chest and back. Glymed’s Gentle Facial Wash is a gentler but still effective exfoliating cleanser.
Use Cold & Warm Compresses
For large, painfully inflamed pimples, alternate cold and warm compresses. Cold compresses can be used to soothe skin and numb pain. You can create a cold compress using a cotton ball or reusable cotton pad. Simply soak the item in cool water and place them in the freezer for about ten minutes or until cold. Apply the compress for a few minutes to areas with painful blemishes.
If you have large, deep pimples that feel like they may be close to popping, you may be able to alleviate the pressure of these blemishes without popping. Instead, apply a warm compress to the inflamed pimples. When larger cysts and blemishes are close to popping, the warm, moist heat from the compress may cause them to drain without being popped. Additionally, warm compresses help to soften skin and reduce inflammation. You can create a warm compress by placing a washcloth in warm water. Then, apply the warm washcloth to the blemishes for a few minutes at a time.
