First, here are fast facts about acne from the American Academy of Dermatology Association:
Acne affects up to 50 million Americans every year.
About 85% of people ages 12 – 24 have at least minor acne.
Acne can develop at any age and continue into a person’s 30s and 40s.
Acne is becoming more common in adults, affecting up to 15% of women.
But why do we have more breakouts in the Summer?
Heat and humidity, sweating, more time outdoors, and increased use of comedogenic sunscreen can all cause a greater risk for more frequent and more severe acne breakouts. The issue is that when we sweat, dead skin cells stay stuck to the skin and are less likely to be naturally removed. The additional oils on the skin from sweat and sunscreen can keep these dead skin cells trapped in the pores. This will cause a blemish on its own, but trapping dead skin cells, oils, and dirt and grime from the environment inside of pores creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Acne-causing bacteria transform typical blemishes into painful, harder-to-treat infected acne breakouts.”
What can you do about it?
Don’t over-cleanse! Wash your skin twice/day with a gentle foaming cleanser such as Skin Script Citrus Green Tea Cleanser.
Use Sensitive Skin Cleansing Wipes after exercise or sweating. I like Burt’s Bees Sensitive or Refreshing formulas or Rooted Beauty Sensitive. Keep them in your purse or gym bag to have them handy when you need them.
Don’t forget to moisturize appropriately. If we don’t provide moisture after cleansing, the skin makes up for it by producing more oil. I like Skin Scrip Light Aloe or Ageless for breakout-prone skin.
Exfoliate three times/week to keep the dead skin from clogging those pores. Glycolic Cleanser by – you guessed it – Skin Script is gentle but effective on the face, chest and back.
Last but critically important, keep wearing your sunscreen, just use the right kind of SPF on your face. My hands down favorite summer SPF is Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 by CeraVe.
We proudly carry Skin Script products at Authentic Beauty and we can easily drop ship them to you anywhere in the U.S.
